Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 25th, 2026

Bradford is buzzing with creativity as the Bradford Culture Company announces the recipients of the 2026 Artist Awards. This exciting initiative, which follows the success of the Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, aims to support local artists in bringing their imaginative projects to life. The awards focus on a diverse range of artistic expressions, including theatre, dance, writing, and visual arts, ensuring that the cultural legacy of Bradford continues to thrive.

Artist Awards Overview

The 2026 Artist Awards are part of the Bradford Culture Company’s ongoing commitment to nurture local talent. By investing in these artists, the awards not only encourage creativity but also enhance opportunities for the community to engage with various forms of art and culture. This year, the selected projects promise to reflect Bradford's unique spirit and cultural landscape.

Exciting Projects and Artists

Several talented artists have been chosen to receive support for their innovative projects. Here’s a closer look at some of the highlights:

  • Vespertine Garden by Amy and Emma-Jo Bairstow will create a stunning immersive installation at the South Square Centre. This project aims to raise awareness about biodiversity loss through a display of UV-lit sculptural plants and creatures, transforming the space into a magical twilight landscape.

  • Kamal Kaan, a writer and director, will present TO LEAVE THIS SOIL ALTERED, a live performance that combines contemporary dance, music, and poetic storytelling. It explores themes of love, resilience, and belonging, inviting audiences to reflect on growth both biologically and personally.

  • Theatre artist Joachim Keke will premiere The Memory House, an immersive dance-theatre experience that delves into memory, migration, and identity through movement and sound, encouraging audience participation.

  • Munaza Kulsoom, a zine artist, is set to create Gardens of Frizinghall. This project will involve local South Asian residents in capturing the beauty of gardens through photography and interviews, resulting in a series of zines and an exhibition.

  • Poet and theatre maker Kauser Mukhtar plans to explore a new multilingual community theatre piece using puppetry, drawing inspiration from a satirical poem by Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.

  • Kirsty Taylor will present Birth Mum, a site-specific theatre show that provides a gripping look into the lives of women who have had their children removed, created in collaboration with professionals and those with lived experiences.

  • Dancer Ella Tighe will work on Fierce Little Things, a project aimed at exploring girlhood and ambition through dance, co-created with a local cast of young women aged 16-21.

  • Landscape painter Anji Timlin will create her largest works yet, inspired by the rewilding of Bradford’s post-industrial rivers, with exhibitions planned in Keighley and Ilkley under the title CONDUIT.
