Something pretty big is happening in Huddersfield town centre. The whole area is getting a major makeover as part of the Our Cultural Heart project, a regeneration programme designed to create a vibrant new space for everyone. It’s not just about one new building; it’s a whole collection of exciting developments, including a brand-new library hub, a mouth-watering food hall, and a brilliant public square. The construction work is buzzing along, and the first phase of this ambitious project is getting closer to its grand opening, promising a fresh experience for the whole community.

A brand-new library hub is on the horizon

Get ready to mark your calendars, because Huddersfield's fantastic new town centre library hub is on track to open its doors this September. The construction has been moving at a real pace; the main steel frame was finished back in December, and all the glass is now in place. As the building work nears its end, the focus is shifting to what the experience will be like inside. And the best part? That experience has been shaped by the local community.

Last year, during the Our Cultural Heart Libraries Festival, more than 1,000 residents shared their ideas. People asked for comfy reading areas and welcoming, inclusive spaces for families, teenagers, and older visitors. They also wanted a lively programme of creative events. So, this isn't just going to be a building full of books. It’s designed to be a real community anchor. Paired with the new food hall and public square, the library hub will help bring more people into the town centre, supporting nearby shops and cafés. It's a huge step towards creating a cultural district that everyone in Kirklees can feel proud of.

Becky Long, the assistant area manager at Kirklees Libraries, shared some thoughts on the new space.

The hub is due to open in September 2026, and it’s a really important moment for the whole of Kirklees. Libraries across the area have been through a lot of changes recently, so this new building is a chance to reconnect with long‑standing users, people who might not have used a library for years, and completely new visitors. The whole place is being designed as a welcoming space where reading, creativity, wellbeing and digital support can all sit under one roof.

She also highlighted how much the public helped shape the project.

Back in 2025, more than 1,000 local residents got involved in public engagement during our Our Cultural Heart Libraries Festival. Their feedback played a crucial role in shaping the public offer. People told us they wanted large and diverse book collections, quiet reading areas and comfortable places to study or relax. There was strong demand for creative activities, arts and craft workshops, and free or affordable group spaces.

Get ready for a foodie heaven at the new food hall

It’s not just about libraries! The new food hall, another key part of the Our Cultural Heart development, has also taken a massive leap forward. Kirklees Council’s Cabinet has just given the green light for the final steps needed before its opening. This means work can now start on the specialist internal fit out. To make this final phase happen, the Cabinet approved up to £3 million from the existing programme budget.

David Shepherd, Executive Director for Place, commented on the milestone:

The approval from Cabinet is an important milestone. The building is taking shape and we can now focus on completing the specialist fit out and confirming the operator so the food hall is ready to open strongly. This is about creating a high-quality destination in the heart of Huddersfield that supports local businesses, creates jobs and gives people another great reason to spend time in the town centre. We are setting it up for long-term success.

Fancy a bit of funding for your creative project?

And there’s more good news for the creative community. Kirklees Council, in partnership with One Community and BAM Construction, has launched the ‘Our Cultural Heart Fund’. This is a brand-new fund set up to support local culture, heritage, and wellbeing projects across Kirklees. The idea is to provide vital support to voluntary, community, and social enterprise organisations, helping them bring their creative ideas to life.

There are two types of grants available:

  • Up to £10,000 for smaller projects

  • Up to £25,000 for larger initiatives

The first round of applications for the fund opened on Wednesday 9 March 2026 and will close on Wednesday 22 April 2026. Successful groups should receive their grants by the end of May. It's a fantastic opportunity to get financial support for community-focused projects.

Hayley Austin from One Community said:

We’re really excited about launching this fund to support fantastic organisations throughout Kirklees. There are so many incredible VCSE organisations across the district and we are so pleased to be able to provide a platform for them to thrive.

What's going on with all the construction?

Anyone walking through Huddersfield town centre will have seen the construction site and the big boards surrounding it. As the project moves from Phase One into Phase Two, there will be some changes to the hoarding lines over the next few months. In the first week of April, a new hoarding line will go up along Victoria Lane. Then, in May, scaffolding will be put up around the former library building. By the summer, the old piazza block will be fully boarded off to allow for its demolition. These changes are all part of the planned programme of works leading up to the September opening of the new library hub and public square.

Behind the hoarding, there's a lot of progress. The new library hub's external look is really taking shape, with the internal fit out planned for the summer. The public square is also coming along nicely; the structure for its big water fountain is in, and work on installing the fountain itself has started. Landscaping has also begun, with new paving that celebrates Kirklees' textile history being laid. Even the Food Hall is progressing, with special terrazzo flooring installed as a nod to the old market building, and iconic artwork being reinstalled.

Meet one of the people making it happen

A massive regeneration project like Our Cultural Heart involves a huge team of skilled people. One of them is David Belk, a Chartered Project Manager and Building Surveyor at Castle Owen. His job is basically to be the quality expert for Kirklees Council, making sure everything is built to the highest standard.

He shared some thoughts on the unique challenges of the project:

The Our Cultural Heart project is a complex one. The main challenge lies in repurposing a listed 1960s concrete structure. One of the most demanding aspects for the contractor has been developing a design and on-site detailing solution that can accommodate potential movement in the giant parabolic concrete ‘umbrellas’. These monolithic structures can sway by up to an incredible 10cm in strong winds. Throughout the project I’ve worked closely with the contractors to ensure quality is maintained at every stage. It’s been a privilege to contribute to such a unique and ambitious scheme that will bring so much to the town of Huddersfield. I’m looking forward to seeing the space fully come to life once the project is complete.

With so many exciting developments and a dedicated team bringing it all together, the Our Cultural Heart project is set to totally transform the Huddersfield town centre experience.
