Wakefield's about to get a serious flavour boost. If you're bored of the same old sandwich for lunch or you're just after something different to do in town, the Continental Street Market might be exactly what you need. From 29 May to 1 June, Northgate is turning into a foodie paradise packed with international dishes, handmade goodies, and a buzzing street market vibe. It's open from 10am to 6pm each day—and it's free to walk around.

Whether you're dragging the kids along, meeting mates for lunch, or just fancy a wander with something tasty in hand, there’ll be something for everyone.

Street food from around the world, right on your doorstep

Imagine walking through Wakefield city centre and catching the smell of sizzling Spanish churros, freshly baked Italian pizza, and spicy Asian noodles—all without needing a passport. That’s exactly what’s on offer. Over 25 traders will be setting up shop on Northgate, each bringing their own twist on global street food and culture.

There’ll be something for every appetite:

  • Sweet stuff: like Dutch pancakes or those famous Spanish churros covered in chocolate
  • Savoury bites: wood-fired pizza, Thai curries, and burgers stacked sky high
  • Vegan and veggie options: because it’s 2025 and of course there are!

You can graze as you go or commit to a proper meal. Either way, it’s a great excuse not to cook.

Handmade gifts and crafty finds

It’s not just about food (though let’s be honest, that’s a big part of it). There’ll also be stalls selling artisan products—things like hand-poured candles, homemade soaps, quirky jewellery, and wooden toys. So if you’ve got birthdays coming up or just want to treat yourself to something a bit different, it’s worth a browse.

Think of it like a little Etsy street—except you can actually smell the candles and haggle over prices.

What the council says (and why they’re excited too)

Cllr Michael Graham, who’s in charge of all things regeneration and growth in the area, reckons this kind of event is just what the city centre needs. Here’s what he said:

“It’s fantastic to see the Continental Street Market coming to Wakefield, bringing with it an array of exciting flavours and unique products. Events like these boost visitors to our city centre, supporting local businesses while offering people a great experience. Whether you're a foodie or just looking for something different, this is an event not to be missed.”

He’s got a point. Wakefield’s been working hard on sprucing up the city centre and getting more people out and about again. Markets like this help pull people in and support both the traders and nearby shops and cafés.

Not in Wakefield? Don’t worry, it’s going on tour

If you can’t make it to Wakefield or you just want to go again (no judgement), the Continental Street Market will also be heading to other towns in the district:

  • Castleford: 12 – 15 June
  • Pontefract: 6 – 9 November

So you’ve got options.

Quick recap – here's what you need to know

  • Where: Northgate, Wakefield

Final thought: worth popping by?

Absolutely. Even if you're not a massive foodie, it's something a bit different to do. You might find your new favourite lunch spot or a weird little trinket you didn’t know you needed. Plus, it’s a great way to support small traders and give Wakefield city centre a bit more buzz.

And let’s face it—any excuse for pizza at 11am is a good one.
