|This summer, Wakefield is set to undergo a significant transformation aimed at enhancing its city centre. The initiative, led by Wakefield Council, is designed to create a cleaner, safer, and more inviting environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. With a series of planned improvements kicking off, the city is ready to welcome everyone with open arms.
Summer Action Plan
Throughout the summer, Wakefield Council will be rolling out a comprehensive action plan that focuses on various aspects of city maintenance and safety. This includes:
Road resurfacing on main routes such as Wood Street, Westgate, and Marygate.
Repainting road markings to enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians.
Upgrading the pedestrianised Silver Street, using materials that will also benefit other areas of the city.
Increased street and pavement cleaning, along with refreshing bins and signage.
Removal of graffiti and improved waste management practices.
These actions are part of a broader effort to not only enhance the appearance of the city but also to foster a sense of community pride and safety.
Community Involvement
Karl Johnson, the Leader of Wakefield Council, expressed the importance of collaboration in achieving these goals:
“Residents and businesses deserve a clean, safe and welcoming city centre. Getting this right is at the heart of how we can build a sense of positivity and momentum across our district.”
Johnson emphasised that the initiative aims to boost local spending and create new opportunities for residents. By improving the city centre, the council hopes to encourage more people to visit and spend time in Wakefield.
Partnerships for Progress
The success of this project relies heavily on partnerships between various stakeholders. Danny Critchley, the Wakefield BID Manager, highlighted the importance of working together. “Creating a Wakefield that we can all be proud of takes genuine partnership working,” he said. “We welcome this commitment from Wakefield Council and look forward to working alongside the Council, West Yorkshire Police, businesses, and partners across the city centre to deliver positive improvements that benefit everyone.”
This collaborative approach is seen as vital for long-term success, ensuring that all voices are heard and that the improvements made are beneficial to the entire community.
Enhanced Safety Measures
As part of the summer action plan, residents will notice an increased presence of enforcement and police officers in the city centre. This initiative aims to address various issues, including:
Anti-social behaviour
Street drinking
Environmental crime
Fly-tipping
Waste-related offences
Begging
Breaches of the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO)
By tackling these issues head-on, the council hopes to create a safer environment for everyone. The visible presence of enforcement officers is expected to boost public confidence and support local businesses.
Looking Ahead
The improvements planned for this summer are just the beginning. While immediate changes are being implemented, there are also discussions about longer-term plans to ensure that Wakefield continues to grow and evolve. Johnson noted, “We know bigger changes are needed for the future. While we develop longer-term plans, we’re starting with immediate improvements people will see and feel now.”
