Welcome to Yorkshire
News • July 8th, 2026
|Young people in the Wakefield district can now take advantage of free swim sessions specifically designed for those aged 16 to 24. This initiative is part of the improved Aspire Ignite Membership, which aims to encourage more young individuals to become active, confident, and healthy. With qualified swim instructors available, these sessions provide a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to learn how to swim or simply gain more confidence in the water.
Free Swim Sessions Available
The free swim sessions are accessible to all Aspire Ignite Members. These sessions are not structured like formal lessons, meaning there is no pressure to perform. Instead, participants can take their time and progress at their own pace. This relaxed environment is perfect for those who may feel nervous or unsure about swimming.
Support from Qualified Instructors
Having qualified instructors on hand during these sessions makes a significant difference. They can help young swimmers improve their technique and offer guidance on water safety. This is especially important as the summer months approach, when many people will be enjoying swimming pools, lakes, and beaches.
Building Confidence in the Water
Many young people may have the ability to swim but lack the confidence to do so effectively. The Council understands this challenge and aims to provide a non-judgmental space where young individuals can feel comfortable while developing their skills.
As Cllr Lukasz Borcz, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport:
“Swimming is not only a great way to get active but it’s also an important life skill.”
How to Get Involved
Signing up for the Aspire Ignite Membership is simple and opens the door to many activities, including these free swim sessions. Interested young people can register for the membership by visiting the official website: Aspire Ignite Membership. Once registered, members can take advantage of all the benefits, including access to swimming sessions.
