This week, as temperatures are forecasted to soar, Wakefield Council is urging residents and visitors to keep safe by staying out of open water. The message comes alongside an ‘Amber Warning for Extreme Heat’ issued by The Met Office, highlighting the potential dangers associated with swimming in lakes, rivers, and reservoirs during the hot weather.

Heat Wave Warnings

Cllr Rebecca Webster, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer Stronger Communities, emphasised the importance of safety during this heatwave. She stated, “Our message is simple. Stay safe, stay out of the water.” The council is deeply concerned about the risks involved in swimming in open water, especially since there are no safe spots for such activities in the district.

Risks of Open Water Swimming

Swimming in open water can be exceptionally dangerous. Hidden dangers beneath the surface, such as submerged rocks or debris, can pose serious threats. Additionally, sudden immersion in cold water can lead to cold water shock, a condition that can incapacitate even strong swimmers. Cllr Webster pointed out, “Anyone entering open water is at a real risk of being trapped by hidden dangers underneath or going into cold water shock.”

Previous summers have tragically highlighted the dangers of open water swimming, with incidents resulting in fatalities despite warning signs being present. This reinforces the need for caution and awareness during this heatwave.

What to Do in an Emergency

In the unfortunate event that someone is in trouble in the water, the council has provided clear guidance on what to do:

  • Phone 999 immediately.
  • Tell the person in trouble to float on their back to help keep their head above water.
  • Throw something that can help them stay afloat, like a buoy or even a piece of clothing, if safe to do so.

This advice is crucial for ensuring that help can reach those in danger without putting others at risk by jumping in after them.

Enjoying the Summer Safely

With so many beautiful parks and green spaces in the area, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the summer safely without taking unnecessary risks. Cllr Webster encourages everyone to embrace the outdoors responsibly, stating, “We’ve got so many beautiful places on our doorstep to enjoy the hot weather. So, let’s do so safely.”

In addition to staying out of the water, residents are reminded that lighting fires or bringing BBQs to parks is prohibited. Keeping these areas safe and clean is essential for everyone’s enjoyment. Visitors are encouraged to use bins provided or take any litter home to help maintain the beauty of local green spaces.
