York is taking a significant step towards creating play areas that everyone can enjoy, regardless of their abilities. The City of York Council has launched the Accessible and Inclusive Play Areas Survey 2026, aimed at gathering opinions from disabled children, young people, and their families. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve parks and green spaces across the city, with an initial investment of £750,000.

Investment in Play Areas

The total budget for this project could reach around £925,000, thanks to additional funding sources, including S106 money. This financial boost will allow the council to prioritise improvements in areas where play equipment is outdated or where there is a higher need for accessible facilities. So far, 19 sites have been identified for upgrades, including:

These upgrades will focus on enhancing play equipment, improving surfacing, adding seating, and ensuring better access for all children.

What Feedback is Needed?

The survey aims to gather valuable insights from the community, focusing on several key areas:

  • What types of accessible surfaces and features are most important?

  • What inclusive and adaptive equipment should be included?

  • How can children of different abilities play together more effectively?

  • What sensory and quiet spaces are needed?

  • What barriers currently prevent families from visiting play areas?

This feedback will be crucial for guiding the design and implementation of the new play spaces, ensuring they reflect the needs and desires of local families.

How to Participate

The survey is open until 30 June 2026. Families are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas, as this will help shape the future of York's play areas. For those who prefer a paper copy or need the survey in a different format, such as braille or large print, assistance is available by calling 01904 551550 or emailing ycc@york.gov.uk. Copies can also be picked up at local libraries or Explore Centres.

Additionally, a drop-in session will be held at Chesney Fields play area (Foxwood Lane, YO24 3PG) on Wednesday 17 June from 3–5pm. This event will provide an opportunity for community members to speak directly with council representatives about their ideas and concerns.

Community Voices Matter

As Councillor Jenny Kent, the Executive Member for Environment and Climate Emergency, stated, “We are improving our oldest play equipment and creating spaces that bring people of all ages and ability together. We want them to be fun, beautiful and welcoming for all.” This sentiment reflects the council’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in play areas.

By participating in the survey, residents can help ensure that every child in York has the opportunity to play, feel included, and thrive. The insights gathered will influence how funds are allocated and how improvements are made, ultimately leading to a more vibrant and accessible community for everyone.
