Welcome to Yorkshire

|A young man from Hull has received praise for his determination and success, thanks to the support of a charity that helps disabled people access vital transport. Ben Shepherd, who is 20 years old and has cerebral palsy, recently secured a full-time job at his local college, marking an important milestone in his journey towards independence.
Ben's Journey
On Friday 3rd July 2026, Ben Shepherd celebrated a significant achievement by taking on the role of Managed Information Systems assistant at Wilberforce Sixth Form College. His journey towards this new position has been made possible by the Motability Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping disabled individuals overcome transport barriers. The foundation provides grants that enable people to travel more freely, which can open up new opportunities in education and employment. While studying for a Diploma in Information Technology Systems, Ben received £1,750 in funding for driving lessons tailored to his needs. This funding allowed him to take 40 hours of lessons in an adapted vehicle. In 2023, he successfully passed his driving test, which was a major step towards gaining independence. Now, with his adapted Volkswagen Polo, he can easily travel to and from college. Ben’s role at the college involves working with data to help assess student funding, a task he finds rewarding and engaging. He previously completed an apprenticeship at the same institution, where he honed his skills in an administrative capacity.
The Impact of the Motability Foundation
The Motability Foundation plays a crucial role in supporting individuals like Ben. By funding transport options for disabled people, the foundation helps to ensure that they can make the journeys they choose. This is particularly important, as transport remains one of the biggest challenges facing disabled individuals.
In Ben's own words:
“Getting a Motability Foundation grant has made me feel free. I now have full independence. Without being able to drive, I wouldn’t be able to do my job, getting to the college and back.”
His newfound ability to drive has boosted his confidence and allowed him to engage in activities that were once out of reach. The charity not only supports individuals but also collaborates with other organisations to enhance transport accessibility. This means that hundreds of thousands of disabled people can benefit from improved transport options each year.
Words of Praise
Nigel Fletcher, the CEO of the Motability Foundation, expressed his congratulations to Ben for his new role at the college:
“His achievement highlights how access to transport can open doors to education, employment and greater independence.”
“We know that transport remains one of the biggest barriers many disabled people face. That’s why we’re committed to supporting disabled people to make the journeys they choose, helping them access the opportunities that matter most to them. Ben's journey is a fantastic example of what's possible when those barriers are removed.”
Continuing the Journey
Ben’s story is not just about getting a job; it is also about the ongoing journey towards greater independence. Recently, he acquired a second Volkswagen Polo through the Motability Scheme, ensuring that he can continue to access the transport he needs.
As Ben looks to the future, he hopes to further develop his career within the college:
“I moved into the department of Managed Information Systems, which looks at data and to make sure students are getting enough funding - I really enjoy it. It’s quite technical and a really niche job. I hope to stay here and train-up to be an MIS officer with the college.”
Ben’s determination and the support he has received exemplify how crucial it is for disabled individuals to have access to reliable transport. His journey illustrates the positive impact that organisations like the Motability Foundation can have on the lives of people in Yorkshire and beyond. By helping individuals like Ben, the foundation not only assists them in overcoming daily challenges but also empowers them to pursue their dreams and aspirations
