A hidden island of obscurity tucked away in a quiet, anonymous area of Hull. I needed somewhere to escape the world for a few hours, a secluded and private space to chill and relax: where time is suspended, the pressures and norms of the outside world are held at the door, a place where I could gently disappear in a friendly, safe and non judgemental environment: this all male spar was just the ticket. As it was my first visit there, the staff were really welcoming and were able to provide initial reassurance that I was indeed at the correct venue with the right clientele, outline the facilities and norms of the spa, give me a locker key, footwear and a towel and explained all the facilities available: I had everything I needed to head in. I put my technology away, took an incredibly long and refreshing shower and went to explore. The facilities offered excellent value for the entry fee and were more than sufficient for my needs: showers WC, 2 hot tubs, steam room, sauna. There was a really good traditional pub bar section with a range of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages available. I also noticed an outside area, presumably for smoking and/or cool downs, but I didn't explore it. Upstairs there's a changing room with lockers, with some activity rooms on the same floor, a TV room with comfortable leather sofas, lockable rest cabins, exercise walls with designated waist high circular release points, and a handy strap hammock with extra leg support is also available if required. On the floor above, additional rooms including a large matted area for floor routines, another lounge area, both rooms with large screens playing suitably atmospheric background imagery to set the right ambience, along with social rooms and activity rooms, there are also spaces for solo or private workouts. There's space for all the usual types of group activities, in addition to private rooms for private workouts, so if you and a buddy need to get down, get focussed and really nail that tough routine, there's plenty of quiet corners to slip in to. These quieter areas include rest spaces where you can lie down, dim the lights, put your legs up and take a load off your feet, or drain your sack of worries in a warm, welcoming space. I got a really good vibe from the staff, the locals were also very friendly and I was able to help a few of them finish their workouts, they seemed keen to help me with mine, so my visit ended up being good fun as well as incredibly beneficial exercise. I engaged in notable and enjoyable exchanges of with some of the guys there, giving me a chance to relax and take it easy in good company, along with some unexpectedly diverting and refreshingly welcome banter at the bar: conversations that were a genuine and memorable delight. Overall it was a great visit, incredibly relaxing and just what I needed. Something for the mind and body and I came away recharged, replenished and refilled. I'd be happily return for a few hours here again. Thanks guys, just what the doctor ordered.
This sauna is situated in a quiet residential area and consequently it is easy to park in the side streets. The sauna is open from Wednesday to Sunday inclusive and is behind a pub which is only open weekends after 6pm. The entrance to the sauna is in the side road is discrete. The reception area is just a small desk at the base of the stairs. You go up to the first floor to the main changing area. Also on this floor is a video room, various cubicles and resting areas (G.H. & Sling). On the upper floor there is another video room and massages are available on certain days of the week. On the ground floor next to reception is the wet area which has two Jacuzzis, sauna and a very small steam room as well as showering and lavatory facilities. One might describe the place as being a bit “seedy”, but everything appears to be reasonably clean. Be careful of the under seat steam-vent in the small steam room. I went on a Saturday afternoon and there were approximately 30 to 35 guys during the afternoon mainly in their 30’s to 60’s. An extremely active clientele, who all seemed to be enjoying themselves. The staff and clients were very friendly and helpful. Okay this place may be a “bit rough around the edges” but what can you expect for a £5 entry fee including free drinks and snacks and very often with special drink offers from the pub. I doubt whether this low price can be sustained in the long run as very little profit can be generated. When I was there a free pint of stout was offered to customers. It is difficult to make a comparison with the other sauna in town which is much larger, more inviting and probably better fitted. It has the complication of having very limited free parking on site and being too large unless there are a lot of clientele. They do however give free meals on certain occasions. It seems to have tried to compete on price removing its previous membership fee, but it is still a basic £12. “You pays your money and you takes your chance”. Sometimes the “seedy” places are also more fun though!
Visiting from Australia with my partner. We enjoyed our time at the Gentry. The staff are friendly, very helpful and made us so welcome we have returned a few more times while we are in the UK. We have tried a few saunas in the UK during our visits and have found Gentry to be the best. The clients are friendly too and not to precious to have a conversation. They too made us so welcome. We would of course like a bigger dark room but space may prevent this. The sauna, steam room, spa baths are good and showers with plenty of hot water were just great and staff regularly patrolling to ensure everything was clean and tidy. Attached is a bar for drinks in a pub atmosphere. This place is just right. We loved it. Hope you are open on our next trip to the Uk.
Very welcoming Sauna. I have visited this sauna a day or so ago whilst waiting for the ferry to Rotterdam. The place is clean and tidy. The personnel is very welcoming and friendly and makes you feel at home real quickly. The atmosphere is relaxed and the place was quite busy when I entered but I entered at an inconvenient time of about 16.30 so there were more people leaving as there were coming in. But ok, I expected that already. They have a large selection of private areas, chill-out areas, cabins, glory holes etc where you can enjoy yourself with whoever you bump into. You can enjoy yourself very privately in those cabins but there are also areas where you can do it publicly if that is more to your liking. Alltogether I had an enjoyable stay and would return here if I am ever in the area again!
I first tried Gentry a few months ago and since then I have become a regular! The staff are friendly and welcoming, the facilities are clean and well maintained. The atmosphere is laid back and chilled and contraceptives are supplied for free. Generally it's a wonderful place and if your thinking about going, go! It will be worth it.
