Family Fun Day in Hull on August 1, 2026, Supports Type 1 Diabetes Awareness

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 5th, 2026

Families in Hull are invited to a special Family Fun Day on Saturday, August 1, 2026, to support children living with type 1 diabetes. The event, taking place at The Goodfellowship pub on Cottingham Road, is organised by John Story in memory of his daughter Lyla, who tragically passed away from complications related to undiagnosed type 1 diabetes.

Why This Event Matters

Type 1 diabetes is a serious condition where the body cannot produce insulin, a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels. When left untreated, it can lead to severe health issues. Lyla's story highlights the importance of early diagnosis, as she showed symptoms like extreme tiredness and increased thirst, but was misdiagnosed with tonsillitis before her passing in May 2025.

This Family Fun Day aims to raise awareness about the symptoms of type 1 diabetes and the need for routine testing in children. All proceeds from the event will go to the HEY Kids Type 1 Diabetes Children & Family Support Group, which provides vital support to families affected by the condition.

What to Expect at the Fun Day

The Family Fun Day will start at 12pm and will feature a variety of activities designed to entertain visitors of all ages. Some of the exciting attractions include:

  • Bouncy castle

  • Face painting

  • Games and music

  • A raffle

  • An evening auction

These activities not only promise a fun-filled day for families but also aim to gather essential funds to support children living with type 1 diabetes.

John Story's Campaign for Change

Since losing his daughter, John Story has become a passionate advocate for raising awareness and improving diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. He has campaigned at various levels of the health system and successfully secured a House of Commons debate in March 2026. John’s campaign focuses on a ‘test, don’t guess’ approach, encouraging healthcare professionals to test children for diabetes when they exhibit symptoms rather than making assumptions based on other conditions.

To further honour Lyla’s memory and protect other children, John and his family launched a petition for what they call “Lyla’s Law.” This proposed legislation aims to make routine diabetes testing mandatory for babies, toddlers, children, and adolescents when any of the '4 T's' appear:

  • Toileting (increased urination)

  • Thirst (extreme thirst)

  • Tiredness (unusual fatigue)

  • Thinning (weight loss)

Getting Involved

John Story expressed his hopes for the event, saying, “We’re hoping everyone will turn out to attend this family event and help us to make a valuable contribution to an important cause. Every contribution is a step towards change that keeps her memory alive in the most meaningful way.”

Community support is crucial, and attending the Family Fun Day is a great way for families to come together for a good cause while learning more about type 1 diabetes. With both fun and fundraising at the heart of the day, it promises to be a memorable event.

More Information

For those interested in learning more about type 1 diabetes, the dangers it poses, and how to spot symptoms early, additional resources are available online. Videos and educational materials can help inform parents and caregivers about the signs to watch for in their children.

Details about the petition for Lyla’s Law can also be found online, encouraging more people to support the cause and advocate for better health practices regarding diabetes testing in children.

The Family Fun Day is more than just a day of entertainment; it is a gathering that aims to make a difference in the lives of children and families affected by type 1 diabetes. By coming together, the community can help ensure that no other family has to go through the same heartbreak that John Story and his family have experienced.
