|Sheffield will soon host the moving debut musical It Is Well With My Soul by Gareth Hides on 30 August 2024. This powerful new production has already made waves during its world premiere tour, with seven performances, including five sold-out shows at prestigious venues like The Other Palace Studio in London.
Sheffield’s Library Theatre will be the latest stage to showcase this poignant narrative.
A tribute to a timeless hymn
It Is Well With My Soul was penned to mark the 150th anniversary of the sinking of the ocean liner Ville du Havre—a tragedy that inspired the writing of the iconic Gospel hymn of the same name. The musical not only commemorates this event but also delves into the profound themes of grief, resilience, and hope that have made the hymn a timeless piece of music history.
For a sneak peek into the musical’s atmosphere, viewers can watch a short trailer on YouTube, available with and without subtitles.
A journey through history and emotion
Set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, It Is Well With My Soul follows the lives of Philip and Lucy Bliss as they build their lives in the bustling city of Chicago. The couple forms new relationships with notable figures like lawyer Horatio Spafford, innovative producer George Root, and the passionate preacher D.L. Moody.
As Philip's fame as a hymn writer and soloist grows, he faces ethical dilemmas that test his moral compass. The devastation of the Great Chicago Fire and the tragic sinking of the Ville du Havre further complicate their journey, pushing them into a battle for hope amidst overwhelming despair.
Themes of resilience and hope
This musical explores the indomitable human spirit in the face of unimaginable loss. Through its compelling narrative and emotive score, audiences are invited to reflect on their own experiences of pain and resilience, finding commonality with the characters on stage.
Critics have praised It Is Well With My Soul, with LondonFringeTheatreReviews awarding it a five-star review and calling it "Poignant, elegant and deeply moving." The Baptist Times echoed this sentiment, describing the show as "A truly remarkable show."
