This walk from Wakefield to Castleford combines lovely countryside with a step into the region's industrial past. The Route what3words for start point: ///evenly.mental.burns Start Point: Wakefield Finish Point: Castleford Distance: 9 Miles GPX Route Map wakefield-canalDownload Walk Description Follow the route of Wakefield canal from the centre of the town on the river Calder to Castleford and take in the pretty scenery as well as the industrial heritage of the region. Highlights of the walk are the Stanley Ferry aqueducts, one Victorian structure and the other a modern construction in the 1980's built to compliment the original. You will also see the southlands wetlands centre on route and this is a nice stop off for the family. The walk also passes very close to the world famous Hepworth gallery before heading off to Castleford.

The route is mainly flat and takes in countryside paths, with viewing points along the way such as horse stables and large bodies of open water/lakes. There are often lots of butterflies along the initial walking path too so great photo opportunity. There are suitable stopping points to have a picnic etc if the weather is nice. There are also further paths along the route if you wish to deviate from the route and walk further if you prefer longer walks.

This is a lovely short circuit of the town of Pontefract, made famous by the eponymous liquorice cakes and the death of Richard II in the town's castle. The reserve covers waterways, woodland and grassland with open water sections to the site as well. This is a lovely oasis to the pace of modern life and is seen as many in area as a place to find peace. There are several paths to take so you can explore at your own pace.
