A Festival Steeped in Tradition and Innovation

Yorkshire, famed for its rich cultural heritage, hosts numerous festivals, but Musicport stands out for its eclectic mix of world and folk music. Founded over two decades ago by Jim McLaughlin, the festival has grown from a single concert space event to a multi-venue extravaganza at Whitby Pavilion. This 19th-century entertainment complex provides a unique setting with its various performance spaces, including a café-turned-DJ hub, the North Sea Stage, and the magnificent Edwardian theatre.

Jim McLaughlin reflects on the festival’s journey:

"The festival was my slightly off-the-wall idea back in 1999 and really only meant to be a one-off Millennium event … The festival is important for an area that is culturally quite isolated and it has been great to see over this 20 odd years how it has affected people's lives, especially the young people we have involved in our activities. The festival’s future really depends on further developing the youth elements and embedding itself more fully within the local community.”

Star-Studded Lineup for 2024

Musicport 2024 features an impressive array of artists:

  • Afro Celt Sound System: Grammy nominees and pioneers in the global music scene.
  • Jah Wobble and The Invaders of the Heart: Featuring former PiL bassist with an eclectic sound.
  • Justin Adams & Mauro Durante: Guitarist for Robert Plant paired with a leading violinist from Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino.
  • Ashley Hutchings & Becky Mills: Folk-rock legend with a touch of Yorkshire charm.

Spotlight on Divanhana and Rokia Koné

Divanhana, the celebrated sevdah group from Bosnia and Herzegovina, will be a highlight of Musicport 2024. Following their acclaimed performance at the Songlines 25th Anniversary concert in London, they embark on an English tour culminating at Whitby. Their album "Zavrzlama," crowned Best Group at the 2023 Songlines Music Awards, exemplifies their passionate renditions of Balkan folk songs.

Rokia Koné, known as the Rose of Bamako, headlines on Friday, October 25. Her soulful voice, blending traditional Mande rhythms with modern influences, has earned critical acclaim and prestigious awards. Rokia's performance at Musicport is part of her UK tour, showcasing her debut album "BAMANAN" produced by Jacknife Lee.

Embracing Cultural Diversity

Musicport Festival not only celebrates music but also cultural exchange. The Tibetan Buddhist Tashi Lhunpo Monks will share their sacred chants and dances, offering a glimpse into their unique heritage. Additionally, the festival features a diverse lineup including the all-female vocal Chechen group Pankisi Ensemble, the Afro-Cuban rhythms of Orchestra Mambo, and the neo-folk sounds of Galdorcraeft.

Engaging Workshops and Interactive Experiences

The Royal Hotel ballroom, just a short walk from the Pavilion, will host various creative workshops, providing attendees with hands-on experiences in music and arts. These workshops aim to inspire and engage participants of all ages, fostering a sense of community and cultural appreciation.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Whitby Pavilion ensures accessibility for all, with ramps and a lift providing access to most areas, except the theatre balcony. The festival's commitment to inclusivity extends to its programming, aiming to attract families and diverse audiences while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
