Welcome to Yorkshire

|A remarkable challenge is set to take place in Bingley, where local resident James Williams will attempt to lift a staggering 570 tonnes in just 24 hours. This extraordinary feat is not only a test of strength but also a heartfelt tribute to his late partner, Nicola, as well as an initiative to encourage open discussions about death, grief, and the importance of planning for the future. The event is scheduled for 26 June, coinciding with what would have been Nicola's 57th birthday.
James's Tribute to Nicola

James, who is 53 years old, will be lifting, pressing, and pulling the immense weight at Flacks Fit 24, the gym he frequents in Bingley. Each kilogram he lifts will symbolically represent a year of Nicola’s life. James describes Nicola as “quiet, caring, sarcastic in the best way, and the person who changed my life.” Their journey together was one of love and support, especially during Nicola’s battle with melanoma, a type of skin cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2023. Over the next two years, her condition worsened, ultimately leading to her wish to remain at home during her final days.
The Role of Sue Ryder
During this challenging time, James benefitted from the care provided by Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. He expressed his surprise at the extensive support offered by hospices, stating, “I thought it was just a building you go to at the very end. But the support Nicola received at home from the Sue Ryder Nurses was incredible. It meant she could stay where she wanted to be, and that made a huge difference.” This care allowed Nicola to spend her final moments in comfort and dignity, something that is invaluable for families facing similar situations.
Encouraging Conversations About Grief
James’s motivation extends beyond his personal loss; he aims to spark important conversations about death and grief that many people tend to avoid. He believes that discussing topics like wills and end-of-life wishes can help ease the burden on loved ones left behind. “People don’t like talking about death, wills, or what they want at the end of their life. They think that if they talk about it, they’re somehow tempting fate. But you’re not. You’re making life easier for the people you love,” he explained. By sharing his story and undertaking this challenge, James hopes to help others understand the breadth of care available through hospices and to show that there is support out there during difficult times.
Community Support
The community at Flacks Fit 24 has played a crucial role in James’s journey. He credits the gym, owned by Peter and Lisa Trotter, as a lifeline during the toughest months of his life. “The support, the people, the routine, it’s meant the world. I couldn’t do this without them,” he shared. James’s challenge has already garnered significant attention, with over £9,000 raised towards his ambitious £15,000 target for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. This fundraising effort is vital as it enables the hospice to continue providing essential care and support to those in need.
Join the Challenge
James is set to begin his 24-hour challenge on 26 June at Flacks Fit 24. This event is open to the public, and James welcomes anyone who wishes to join him or support his cause. Donations can be made through his JustGiving page, which has been set up to help raise funds for the hospice. The link to donate is www.justgiving.com/page/mrconnectivity.
Understanding Hospice Care
Hospices, such as Sue Ryder, offer more than just end-of-life care; they provide comprehensive support that can begin long before a person’s final days. This includes pain management, emotional support, and assistance for families. James hopes that through his challenge, more people will become aware of the services available and feel encouraged to talk about their own wishes regarding end-of-life care.
