Welcome to Yorkshire

|A remarkable event took place at Flacks Fit 24 gym in Bingley on 26 June 2026, when local resident James Williams undertook a monumental challenge to lift 610 tonnes in memory of his late partner, Nicola Burton, on what would have been her 57th birthday. This incredible feat not only showcased his physical strength but also highlighted the emotional journey of grief and remembrance.
James’ Challenge
James spent 12 hours lifting, pressing, and pulling weights, achieving an average of 847 kilograms per minute. Originally, he aimed to lift 570 tonnes—one tonne for each year of Nicola's life. However, he surpassed his goal, lifting a total of 610 tonnes. Each lift was dedicated to Nicola, who battled cancer with remarkable strength and positivity. James expressed, “I wanted to honour the woman who changed my life and whose death has left a huge hole in it. I miss her every single day.”

The day was filled with support from family, friends, and the local community. James reflected on the love and encouragement he received, stating, “I was surrounded by love and support throughout the day.” Despite the joy of completing the challenge, returning home alone later that evening brought an overwhelming sense of sadness. The quietness of his house served as a stark reminder of his loss.
The owners of Flacks Fit 24, Peter and Lisa Trotter, played a significant role in making this event memorable. They not only provided the venue but also made a generous donation of £3,000 directly to the Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. James appreciated their efforts, saying, “The way they transformed the gym into a place of strength, community, and remembrance is something I’ll never forget.”
Gratitude for Support
James expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Sue Ryder team who supported him during the challenge, as well as to everyone who came to cheer him on. He acknowledged the importance of their presence, stating, “Your presence meant the world.” The funds raised will go towards providing vital services at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, which offers palliative care, emotional support, and bereavement help to families in the region.
A Personal Connection
Tragically, the challenge took on an even deeper meaning for James, as he revealed that his mother has also been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The compassionate care provided by the Manorlands team has already begun to support her, making the challenge even more significant. “Knowing the compassionate care they provide makes every lift, every hour, and every donation even more important,” he noted.
The Importance of Support
James emphasised that no one should face the end of life or grief alone, highlighting the crucial role that organisations like Sue Ryder play in providing expert and caring support when it matters most. “Sue Ryder ensures families get expert, caring support exactly when it matters most, including at home,” he explained.
How to Help
The community can still contribute to James’ fundraising efforts. Donations can be made through his JustGiving page, where supporters can help raise funds for the essential services provided by Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. The link to donate is www.justgiving.com/page/mrconnectivity.
This incredible challenge not only honours the memory of Nicola but also raises awareness about the importance of palliative care services in Yorkshire. James’ journey reflects the strength of the human spirit in the face of loss, and the profound impact of community support during difficult times.
